Audition Requirements
Young Artists Association
The following materials are examples of the basic expectations for the Young Artist program. Applicants with more advanced material are encouraged to present it for scholarship consideration. Acceptance by live auditions, via DVD, Skype, or Youtube. See below for audition requirements. DVDs should be mailed to the following address: Academy of Music, Attn: Chamber Music Institute, 4200 Dover Road, Richmond VA 23221.
All Strings:
Perform at least one movement of unaccompanied Bach Sonatas, Partitas, or Suites (no gigue or bouree) and three octave scales and arpeggios in various forms.
Violin:
Kreutzer (any etude)
Mozart (any movement) from concertos # 4 or #5
Kabalevsky (any movement) from concerto in C or an equivalent
Viola:
Kreutzer (any etude)
Handel (movement 1 or 3) concerto in b minor
Schumann (any movement) "Fairtales" or the equivalent
Cello:
Popper (any etude)
Haydn (any movement) Concertos in C or G or the equivalent
Bass:
Mozart Symphony No. 40, Movement 1
One solo work or movement demonstrating technical proficiency
Harp:
Two or three contrasting works, one of which must be 20th century.
Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, and Bassoon:
Chromatic Scales
Mozart Concerto (first or third movement)
French Horn:
Chromatic Scales
Strauss or Mozart Horn Concerto (first or third movement)
Three orchestral excerpts of choice
Trumpet:
A study by Charlier or Arbans
One movement of a concerto by Hummel, Haydn, Arturian, or an equivalent
Trombone:
Etude by Voxman or Blazhevich
One movement of Guilmont, Morel, or an equivalent
Tuba:
Etude by Blazhevich or Borlogni
Solo work by Hindemith, Nelhybel, or an equivalent
Piano:
Dvorak Quintet in A Major, Opus 81, "Dumka", Movement 2 and
Mozart Quintet in E flat Major, K.452, 1st or 2nd Movement
The CMI Piano program is geared to introducing and developing the following skills:
- Chamber music with strings and winds
- Piano accompaniment for all instruments
- Score preparation and interpreting orchestral reductions for piano accompaniments for all instruments
- Music Theory and ear training as they apply to working in ensemble with other instrumentalists

Knowledge of Music History of the 18th and 19th centuries
*This is not a program for learning to play the piano; it is a course that utilizes the skill of advanced pianists to embrace the chamber music repertoire of the 18th and 19th centuries and explore the valuable technique of accompanying instrumentalists, including string, harp, wind, and brass players.

Students registering for RMS will prepare repertoire or etudes to demonstrate your best level of accomplishment. Placement will take place at the start of the Institute.
